Why your dog’s gear is chosen for the two of you, not off a shelf

People want to know which harness, which lead, which collar. They want the answer that worked for the dog down the road. But there is no best tool, the same way there is no best shoe. There is the right tool for this dog and this person, and the wrong one for the next pair, and the skill is knowing the difference.

The best trainer is not the one who owns the most equipment. It is the one who looks at this particular dog and this particular handler, reaches for the right tool, and then teaches the person to use it properly. The knowing-which is half of it. The teaching-how is the other half, and it is the half most people skip.

A tool you cannot use is a useless tool

Here is the part that gets missed. A tool the handler cannot manage, physically or mentally, is a useless tool, however good it looks on paper. A piece of equipment that needs perfect timing and a strong, steady hand is the wrong choice for someone who cannot give it that, no matter how well it suits the dog. So I am never just fitting the dog. I am fitting the pair. The gear has to work in the hands that will actually hold it, on a normal day, when the owner is tired and distracted and the dog is not.

The first question is clarity

Before any of that, I ask one thing: how much clarity does this dog need? Some dogs read a light cue and adjust. Some need the message to be unmistakable before it lands. The amount of clarity a dog needs, paired with how it actually moves, decides the tool. A dog that lunges by driving off its back legs needs something different from a dog that rears up and leans into its harness, because the bodies are doing different things. This is exactly why reading the dog comes before reaching for gear.

Why we do not sell you a list

You will not find a shop page here with the five products every dog needs, because that is not how any of this works. Equipment is chosen in the room, for the dog in front of us and the person holding the lead, and then we make sure it fits both.
